1000 Hands Dance

Thanks to parent Betty Liu for the following on Beijing's 1000 Hands Dance:

DANCE OF 1000 HANDS...

Please read the paragraph below FIRST before you watch the video.

There is an awesome dance, called the Thousand-Hand Guan Yin, which is making the rounds across the net. Considering the tight coordination required, their accomplishment is nothing short of amazing, even if they were not all deaf.

Yes, you read correctly. All 21 of the dancers are complete deaf-mutes. Relying only on signals from trainers at the four corners of the stage, these extraordinary dancers deliver a visual spectacle that is at once intricate and stirring.
Its first major international debut was in Athens at the closing ceremonies for the 2004 Paralympics. But it had long been in the repertoire of the Chinese Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe and had traveled to more than 40 countries.
Its lead dancer is 29 year old Tai Lihua, who has a BA from the Hubei Fine Arts Institute. The video was recorded in Beijing during the Spring Festival this year.

From Patricia:

Check out this you tube video which features Chinese Bluegrass music. It melds Chinese and Western string instruments and it is fabulous. This is my first time posting on this site, so I hope it works. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LALgWz0xc0The article about this group can be found at http://www.penguineggs.ab.ca/peggs.php?page=samplestory.Patricia

The Asian Liver Center at Stanford University http://liver.stanford.edu/ invites your students to apply for the 7th Annual Youth Leadership Conference on Asian and Pacific Islander Health in August 2009 and submit entries for the "B Inspired!" Multimedia Contest in May 2009. We aim to educate and raise awareness about the disproportionately high rates of hepatitis B infection and liver cancer in the API community, as well as to inspire and prepare students to take leadership roles. We firmly believe that youth can effect real change in their communities, and we are committed to investing in their incredible potential. Please see the attached document for more information on the opportunities for your students.
